Method
Cooking the Pasta
- 1
Boil the Pasta
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente, typically about 10-12 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- 2
Drain the Pasta
Once the pasta is cooked, drain it in a colander and set aside. Do not rinse the pasta as you want it to retain some starch.
Making the Bolognese Sauce
- 3
- 4
Add the Garlic
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- 5
Cook the Beef
Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned all over, about 8-10 minutes.
- 6
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Once the beef is browned, stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, red wine, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer.
- 7
Simmer the Sauce
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened and flavors have melded.
Combining and Serving
- 8
Combine Pasta and Sauce
Add the drained penne pasta to the Bolognese sauce and toss gently to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce.
- 9
Serve
Plate the pasta and sauce, and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Serve hot.
