Martini

Optional rinse (if desired)

Method

Martini

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a martini glass (or coupe) in the freezer for at least 5 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.

  2. 2

    Prepare mixing glass

Fill a mixing glass or cocktail shaker with about 6 large ice cubes to properly chill and dilute the drink.

  3. 3

    Add spirits

Pour 1.5 oz gin and 0.5 oz dry vermouth into the mixing glass over the ice.

  4. 4

    Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full spoon rotations). Stirring chills and dilutes the cocktail without over-aerating it; if you prefer a colder, slightly more diluted drink, stir up to 40 seconds.

  5. 5

    Optional vermouth rinse

If you prefer a very dry Martini, discard the 0.5 oz vermouth and instead rinse the chilled glass with a small amount (about 0.1 oz) of vermouth: pour the vermouth into the chilled glass, swirl to coat the interior, then pour out the excess before straining the drink.

  6. 6

    Strain

Discard the ice from the chilled martini glass (or pour out the rinse). Using a Hawthorne strainer or the mixing glass lid, strain the stirred cocktail into the chilled glass.

  7. 7

    Garnish

Express a lemon twist over the surface to release oils and either drop it in or rim the glass and discard, or alternatively garnish with a single olive on a cocktail pick and place it in the drink.

  8. 8

    Serve immediately. Enjoy responsibly.
