- 1
Prepare frozen citrus
If not already frozen, thinly slice citrus (lime, lemon, or orange) and freeze slices flat on a tray for at least 2 hours. Use 3 frozen slices per drink as chilled garnish and flavor concentration.
- 2
Muddle lime and leaves
In a mixing glass or lowball, add the 1/2 fresh lime (cut into 2 or 3 wedges) and the 2 lime leaves. Add the optional 1/4 tsp simple syrup only if you prefer a slightly softer edge. Using a muddler, press firmly 6–8 times to release juice and the aromatic oils from the lime leaves—do not shred the leaves to avoid bitterness.
- 3
Add gin and ice
Pour 2 oz Tanqueray gin into the mixing glass. Add about 1 cup of cubed ice (enough to chill but leave room to stir). Stir gently for 10–15 seconds to combine and chill, integrating the muddled lime and leaf aromas into the spirit.
- 4
Build the drink
Fill a highball or Collins glass halfway with fresh ice cubes. Strain the gin and muddled solids over the fresh ice (a fine strainer if you want less pulp). Add 4 oz chilled tonic water by pouring gently over the back of a spoon to preserve carbonation.
- 5
Add frozen citrus and garnish
Drop 3 frozen citrus slices into the drink; they will chill the cocktail and slowly release bright citrus flavor without diluting quickly. Finish with a lime wheel or wedge on the rim for visual appeal.
- 6
Serve
Serve immediately with a long spoon or straw. Encourage the drinker to gently stir once or twice to blend as the frozen citrus thaw. Adjust sweetness with additional simple syrup to taste if desired.
