Prepare the Beef Patty
In a bowl, mix the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Form into two equal-sized patties.

Cook the Patties
Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness.

Melt the Cheese
During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty and cover to melt.

Prepare the Buns
Toast the burger buns lightly on the grill or skillet for about 1-2 minutes.

Assemble the Burger
On the bottom half of each bun, place lettuce, followed by the patty with melted cheese, tomato slices, and any desired condiments (ketchup and mustard). Top with the other half of the bun.
