Preparation
- 1
Build the cocktail
Place a mixing glass or rocks glass on your work surface. Add 3 dashes of Angostura bitters and 1/2 teaspoon Amarena cherry syrup to the glass. Add 1/4 teaspoon simple syrup if you prefer a slightly sweeter Old Fashioned.
- 2
Add whiskey and stir
Pour 2 ounces of the featured bourbon or rye whiskey over the bitters and syrups. Add a large ice cube (or enough large ice to fill a rocks glass). Stir gently for 20–30 seconds until the drink is slightly chilled and properly diluted (about 25–30% dilution of spirit volume is typical for an Old Fashioned when using a large cube).
- 3
Prepare the orange twist
Using a vegetable peeler or small paring knife, cut a 1½–2 inch wide strip of orange peel, taking care to leave most of the white pith behind. Hold the peel over the glass skin side down and give it a firm twist to release the oils over the surface of the drink. Optionally run the peel around the rim of the glass to add aromatic oils.
- 4
Garnish and serve
Drop the twisted orange peel into the drink and add 1 Amarena cherry on a pick or directly into the glass. If using a mixing glass, strain into a chilled rocks glass over a fresh large ice cube. Serve immediately on the patio or at the bar.
