Method
Fruit
- 1
Rinse grapes and pat dry. Keep small clusters intact for easy picking; remove any stems that are brown or dry.
- 2
Hull strawberries and halve (or quarter if large). Pat dry on paper towels so they don't make the board soggy.
- 3
Core and thinly slice the apple. Toss slices immediately with 1 tsp lemon juice to prevent browning and arrange in a fan on the board.
- 4
If using dried apricots, slice any large pieces in half so they lay flat and are easy to pick.
- 5
Place small bowls of honey and fig jam on the board. Reserve a small spoon or spreader for each condiment.
Cheeses
- 6
Remove all cheeses from the refrigerator 30–60 minutes before serving so they come to room temperature — this improves flavor and makes soft cheeses easier to spread.
- 7
Brie/Camembert
Place the whole wheel on the board. If desired, score the top rind in a shallow cross to make serving easier. Provide a small knife or spreader beside it.
- 8
Aged Cheddar
Trim the cheddar into a small block and cut a few thin slices and 1–2 medium wedges so guests can take a slice or wedge. Leave the remainder as a block with a cheese knife.
- 9
Manchego
Cut the Manchego into 1/8–1/4" slices or small wedges (fan them if you like) and stack slightly so they are easy to pick up.
- 10
Goat Cheese
If using goat cheese log, place it on the board with a small spreader. Optionally roll one end in chopped toasted walnuts or herbs before serving.
- 11
Blue Cheese
Break the blue cheese into bite-size chunks and place in a small mound with a tiny spoon or spreader.
Crackers & Bread
- 12
Slice the baguette thinly and toast briefly (3–5 minutes at 375°F / 190°C) until just golden — let cool. Arrange slices and crackers in small stacks or fanned around the cheeses so guests can reach them easily.
- 13
Keep different cracker types separated so flavors don’t mingle and so guests can choose textures.
Accents & Condiments
- 14
Scatter toasted walnuts or marcona almonds in small piles around the board. If using honeycomb, place a small piece on a corner of the board so guests can drizzle over cheese.
- 15
Place olives in a small bowl and put on the board. Add a small serving fork or toothpicks nearby.
- 16
Spoon fig jam into a small ramekin and position near the soft cheeses (goat cheese and brie pair especially well with jam).
- 17
Tuck rosemary sprigs and mint leaves between items for color and aroma — do not expect guests to eat the rosemary sprigs; they are decorative.
Assembly & Serving
- 18
Choose a large wooden board or platter. Start by placing cheeses spaced across the board to create visual anchors.
- 19
- 20
Arrange fruit (grapes, strawberries, apple slices, dried apricots) in groups around cheeses, creating a variety of colors and textures. Keep grapes in small clusters for easy grabbing.
- 21
Fill gaps with crackers, toasted baguette slices and nuts. Make sure spreaders and knives are placed beside their respective cheeses and that small spoons are provided for condiments.
- 22
Drizzle a bit of honey over a wedge of blue cheese or brie just before serving if desired. Garnish with mint leaves and rosemary sprigs for presentation.
- 23
Provide small plates, napkins, and cheese labels (optional) so guests know which cheeses are which. Replenish items as needed during the gathering.
