1. Prepare the Oven and Pans

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

2. Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground cinnamon.

3. Cream Butter and Sugar

In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the sugar and beat until light and fluffy.

4. Add Eggs and Vanilla

Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

5. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

Alternately add the dry mixture and buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

6. Fold in Apples and Walnuts

Gently fold in the diced apples and chopped walnuts until evenly distributed.

7. Bake the Cake

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

8. Cool the Cake

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Cinnamon Sugar Topping

9. Mix Cinnamon Sugar

In a small bowl, combine granulated sugar and ground cinnamon. Set aside.

10. Apply Topping

Once the cakes are cool, sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the top of one of the cake layers.

Salted Caramel Sauce

11. Make Caramel

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the sugar until it turns golden brown, stirring occasionally.

Once the sugar is melted and golden, carefully add the butter and stir until melted and combined.

13. Incorporate Heavy Cream

Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring continuously. Bring to a gentle boil and cook for 1 minute.

Remove from heat and stir in the sea salt. Allow the sauce to cool slightly before using.

Whipped Cream

In a mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream until soft peaks form.

Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Continue to beat until stiff peaks form.

Assembly

17. Layer the Cake

Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Drizzle with salted caramel sauce, then top with whipped cream.

18. Finish the Cake

Place the second cake layer on top, drizzle with more salted caramel sauce, and decorate with additional whipped cream if desired.

19. Serve

Slice and serve the cake warm or at room temperature, drizzled with extra salted caramel sauce.
