Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt.

  2. 2

    Incorporate Butter

Cut the unsalted butter into small pieces and add to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. 3

    Form the Dough

Add the egg and cold water to the mixture. Mix until a dough forms.

  4. 4

    Chill the Dough

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Filling Preparation

  1. 5

    Sauté Onions

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

  2. 6

    Add Garlic

Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  3. 7

    Cook Meat

Add the ground beef or chicken to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes.

  4. 8

    Combine Ingredients

Stir in the spinach, cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Cook until the spinach is wilted, about 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

Assembling Empanadas

  1. 9

    Preheat Oven

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. 10

    Roll Dough

On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Use a round cutter to cut out circles of dough.

  3. 11

    Fill Dough

Place about 1-2 tablespoons of the filling in the center of each dough circle.

  4. 12

    Seal Empanadas

Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges to seal, and crimp with a fork for a decorative finish.

  5. 13

    Prepare for Baking

Place the empanadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Beat the egg and brush it over the top of each empanada for a golden finish.

  6. 14

    Bake Empanadas

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
