Saffron-infused gin

Supporting flavors

Method

Saffron-infused gin

1

Bloom saffron

Place 10 saffron threads in a small heatproof cup. Add 1 tablespoon hot (not boiling) water to bloom the saffron for 2–3 minutes until deeply colored and fragrant.

2

Combine the bloomed saffron (including liquid) with 2.5 oz gin in a small sealed jar or bottle. Let steep for 20–30 minutes at room temperature for a bright saffron note. For stronger color/flavor, steep up to 1 hour. Chill or proceed to cocktail once infusion time is reached.

Mixing the cocktail

3

Prepare honey syrup (if not ready)

If you don't have orange blossom honey syrup ready: combine equal parts honey and warm water (for this recipe about 0.5 oz honey + 0.5 oz water mixed; use 0.5 oz of the resulting syrup). Stir until uniform. Optionally stir in a drop of orange blossom water (not measured) for additional floral aroma.

4

Dry shake (if using egg white)

In a cocktail shaker, add 2.5 oz saffron-infused gin (shake well and decant infusion to leave threads behind if desired), 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.5 oz honey syrup, 0.25 oz dry vermouth, 2 dashes orange bitters and 0.5 egg white (if using). Secure the lid and shake vigorously without ice for 10–15 seconds to emulsify and build foam.

5

Wet shake

Add about 1 cup of ice to the shaker. Shake energetically for 12–18 seconds until the shaker is very cold to the touch and well aerated.

6

Strain

Double-strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass using a fine mesh strainer to remove ice shards and any saffron solids, leaving a silky surface. If not using egg white, simply add ice to shaker, shake, and fine-strain into glass.

Garnish & serve

7

Express the lemon twist over the drink by holding it skin-side down above the surface and giving it a firm twist to release oils; rub the rim with the twist then drop it into the cocktail.

8

Carefully float 2–3 saffron threads on the foam/surface as a decorative and aromatic garnish.

9

Serve immediately. Advise guests to sip and appreciate the saffron aroma first, then the layered citrus, honey, and botanical notes.
