Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Wash the Collard Greens

Thoroughly rinse the collard greens under running water to remove any dirt or grit. Shake off excess water.

  2. 2

    Remove Tough Stems

Lay each leaf flat on a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, cut along the stem to remove the tough central rib from each leaf. Discard the stems and chop the leaves into bite-sized pieces.

  3. 3

    Prepare Garlic

Peel and finely chop the garlic cloves.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Heat Olive Oil

In a large skillet or pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat until shimmering.

  2. 5

    Sauté Garlic

Add the chopped garlic to the skillet and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.

  3. 6

    Add Collard Greens

Add the chopped collard greens to the skillet and stir well to coat them in the garlic and olive oil.

  4. 7

    Add Broth and Seasoning

Pour in the vegetable broth and add the salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir to combine.

  5. 8

    Simmer

Cover the skillet with a lid and let the collards simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are tender.

  6. 9

    Finish with Lemon Juice

Once the collards are tender, remove the lid and stir in the lemon juice. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

  7. 10

    Serve

Remove the skillet from heat and serve the collard greens warm as a side dish.
