Cake Preparation
- 1
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it's hot when you put the cake in.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- 3
- 4
Combine Mixtures
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- 5
Add Boiling Water
Slowly stir in the boiling water into the batter. The batter will be thin, which is normal.
- 6
Bake the Cake
Pour the batter into two greased 9-inch round cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- 7
Cool the Cake
Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
Frosting Preparation
- 8
Make the Frosting
In a medium bowl, beat the unsalted butter with a mixer until creamy. Gradually add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with the milk, and beat until smooth.
- 9
Add Vanilla
Mix in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
- 10
Frost the Cake
Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate and spread frosting on top. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
