Prepare Burger Patty

Mix the Beef
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Be careful not to overwork the meat.

Shape the Patties
Divide the mixture into two equal portions and form each portion into a patty that is about ¾ inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent puffing during cooking.

Mix the Sauce
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, and pickle relish. Stir until well mixed and set aside.
Assemble the Burger

Prepare the Buns
Slice the burger buns in half and toast them lightly on the grill or in a toaster if desired.

Layer the Ingredients
Spread a generous amount of special sauce on the bottom half of each bun. Place a cooked patty with melted cheddar on top, followed by lettuce leaves, tomato slices (sliced medium tomato into 4 slices), and pickle slices. Top with the other half of the bun.
