Calamari
Spicy Marinara Sauce
Method
Preparing Calamari
- 1
Clean the Calamari
If not pre-cleaned, rinse the calamari under cold water, remove the head and insides, and slice the body into rings.
- 2
Set Up Breading Station
In a shallow dish, combine all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and paprika. In another bowl, whisk together eggs and milk.
- 3
Coat the Calamari
Dip each calamari ring first into the egg wash, then dredge in the flour mixture, ensuring an even coating.
Frying Calamari
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large pot or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).
- 5
Fry the Calamari
Carefully add a few coated calamari rings to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Preparing Spicy Marinara Sauce
- 6
Sauté Garlic
In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and crushed red pepper flakes, sauté until fragrant (about 1 minute).
- 7
Add Tomatoes and Seasoning
Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 8
Finish the Sauce
Add chopped fresh basil just before serving, stirring to combine.
Serving
- 9
Plate the Calamari
Serve the fried calamari hot with a side of spicy marinara sauce for dipping.
