Fried Green Tomatoes
Homemade Comeback Sauce
Method
Fried Green Tomatoes
- 1
Prepare the Tomatoes
Wash the green tomatoes thoroughly. Slice them into 1/2 inch thick rounds.
- 2
Set Up Breading Station
In three separate shallow bowls, place the all-purpose flour in the first bowl, buttermilk in the second bowl, and the cornmeal mixed with salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper in the third bowl.
- 3
Bread the Tomatoes
Dip each tomato slice first into the flour, coating it evenly. Then, dip it into the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, coat the slice in the cornmeal mixture, pressing lightly to adhere.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking (about 350°F or 175°C).
- 5
Fry the Tomatoes
Working in batches, carefully place the breaded tomato slices in the hot oil. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Homemade Comeback Sauce
- 6
Prepare the Sauce
In a medium bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika. Mix well until smooth.
- 7
Season the Sauce
Taste the sauce and add salt and black pepper to your preference. Adjust seasoning as necessary.
