Method
Classic Margarita
- 1
Prepare glass rims
Run a lime wedge around the rim of each tasting glass. Spread coarse salt on a small plate and dip the rims into the salt to coat. Set glasses aside.
- 2
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice (about 1 cup). Add 2 oz blanco tequila, 1 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz orange liqueur, and 0.25 oz agave syrup for a single 2-oz tasting portion. (The ingredient list above is scaled for the full flight; measure per tasting glass.)
- 3
Shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.
- 4
Double-strain into a rimmed tasting glass over a small fresh ice cube if desired or serve neat. Garnish with a small lime wedge.
Smoky Margarita (Mezcal Variation)
- 5
Fill the shaker with ice. Combine 2 oz mezcal, 1 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz orange liqueur, and 0.25 oz agave (for one tasting portion; adjust if making multiple).
- 6
Shake 8–12 seconds to chill and dilute. Taste and add a touch more agave if too tart.
- 7
Fine-strain into a tasting glass (salt rim optional). Garnish with a small lime twist or smoked sea salt rim if desired.
Spicy Jalapeño Margarita
- 8
Muddle 2–3 jalapeño slices gently in the shaker with 0.25 oz agave and 1 oz lime juice to release oils (adjust seeds to control heat).
- 9
Add ice, 2 oz blanco tequila and 0.5 oz orange liqueur. Shake vigorously 10–15 seconds.
- 10
Cucumber-Basil Margarita
- 11
In a shaker, muddle 4–6 cucumber slices and 3–4 basil leaves with 0.25 oz agave and 1 oz lime juice until fragrant.
- 12
Add ice, 2 oz tequila, and 0.5 oz orange liqueur. Shake 10–15 seconds.
- 13
Assembling the Flight
- 14
Prepare three tasting glasses (one per style) with optional salt rims as directed. Pour each prepared margarita into its designated tasting glass (approx. 1.5–2 oz each). Arrange the three glasses on a small tray or board with a lime wedge for each and small tasting notes (Classic, Smoky, Spicy, Cucumber-Basil — pick any three).
- 15
Suggest tasting from lightest/most delicate (Cucumber-Basil) to heaviest/smokiest (Smoky) or from least spicy to most spicy. Encourage sipping and noting differences in base spirit, acidity, sweetness and aromatics.
- 16
If preparing multiple flights, scale ingredients proportionally from the quantities listed and keep shaken cocktails chilled in the shaker with ice, then re-shake briefly before straining into each tasting glass.
