Cocktail Base

Method

Prepare Strawberry-Basil Smash

1

Muddle fruit and herbs

Place the 6 hulled strawberries, 8 basil leaves, and 0.75 tbs granulated sugar into a cocktail shaker or mixing glass. Using a sturdy muddler, press down and twist 12–15 times until the strawberries are broken down and basil is fragrant but not pulverized. Aim for a coarse purée leaving some small fruit pieces for texture.

2

Add citrus and liqueur

Add 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice and 0.5 oz Limoncello to the muddled mixture. Stir or gently shake once to combine and dissolve remaining sugar. This brightens the fruit and infuses additional citrus notes.

3

Add spirit and chill

Pour in 1.5 oz dry gin (or vodka). Fill the shaker halfway with ice (or add crushed ice), secure the lid, and shake vigorously for 8–10 seconds to chill and slightly dilute the drink.

4

Double-strain into glass

Prepare a rocks glass filled halfway with crushed ice (about 1 cup). Strain the shaken mixture through a fine-mesh strainer (double-strain if possible) into the glass to remove seeds and basil bits while keeping the bright puree.

5

Top with soda

Gently pour 2 oz chilled club soda over the strained cocktail to add effervescence. Use a bar spoon to lightly stir 2–3 times to integrate without flattening the bubbles.

6

Adjust sweetness and balance

Taste the cocktail briefly. If it needs more sweetness, add up to 0.25 tbs simple syrup (or a pinch more granulated sugar dissolved) and stir once. If it needs more acidity, add a few drops (about 0.1 oz) more lemon juice.

Garnish and Serve

7

Finish by placing a small basil sprig and a strawberry slice on the rim (and a lemon wheel if using) for aroma and visual appeal. Serve immediately with a short stirring straw so the drink can be briefly mixed before sipping.
