Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Marinate Tuna

In a shallow dish, combine soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and black pepper. Place the Ahi tuna steaks in the marinade, making sure they are well-coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate the fish.

  2. 2

    Prepare Cooking Surface

Heat olive oil in a heavy skillet or cast-iron pan over high heat until it shimmers. Ensure the pan is very hot to achieve a nice sear.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Sear Tuna Steaks

Remove the tuna steaks from the marinade and let any excess liquid drip off. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the steaks in the pan. Sear for about 1-2 minutes on each side for rare, depending on the thickness of the steaks. The outside should be browned, while the inside remains pink.

  2. 4

    Add Sesame Seeds

In the last 30 seconds of cooking, sprinkle the sesame seeds over the top of the steaks, allowing them to toast slightly.

  3. 5

    Rest the Steaks

Once cooked, remove the tuna from the skillet and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing.

Serving

  1. 6

    Plate the Dish

Slice the seared Ahi tuna steak into 1-inch thick pieces. Serve on a plate, garnished with chopped green onions, sliced avocado, and lime wedges on the side.
