French Onion Soup Ingredients

Method

Prepare the French Onion Soup

  1. 1

    Sauté the Onions

In a large pot, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add 2 medium sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.

  2. 2

    Add Broth and Seasonings

Pour in 2 cups of beef broth, 0.5 cup of white wine, 1 teaspoon of thyme, and add 1 bay leaf. Bring to a simmer and let cook for an additional 15 minutes. Remove bay leaf and set aside.

Prepare the Burgers

  1. 3

    Form the Patties

In a bowl, combine 1 pound of ground beef with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Mix gently and form into 4 equal patties.

  2. 4

    Cook the Patties

Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each burger patty for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Gruyere cheese on each patty to melt.

Assemble and Serve

  1. 5

    Build the Burger

Toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster. Place each cooked patty on the bottom half of the bun and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.

  2. 6

    Serve with Soup

Ladle the prepared French onion soup into bowls and serve alongside the assembled burgers for dipping.
