Build and stir
Add the gin, Campari, sweet vermouth, and elderflower liqueur to a mixing glass or cocktail shaker filled with plenty of ice. Add 2 dashes of orange bitters. Stir with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (mixture should be very cold and slightly viscous).
Prepare serving glass
Discard the ice or water from the chilled old-fashioned glass. Place 1 large ice cube (or 2 medium cubes) into the chilled glass.
Finish and garnish
Add 2 more dashes of orange bitters on top if desired. Optional: add a small spritz (about 0.5 oz) of chilled sparkling water to soften the edges. Express an orange peel over the drink by holding it skin-side down above the glass and giving it a firm twist to spray oils onto the surface; then rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the drink as garnish.
