Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Peel and Cut Potatoes

Peel the Yukon Gold potatoes and cut them into evenly sized chunks, about 1-2 inches each, to ensure even cooking.

  2. 2

    Prepare Garlic (Optional)

If using garlic, peel the cloves and leave them whole for boiling with the potatoes.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Boil Potatoes

Place the cut potatoes (and whole garlic cloves if using) in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add 1 tsp of salt. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cook for 15-20 minutes or until the potatoes are tender.

  2. 4

    Drain Potatoes

Once the potatoes are tender, drain them in a colander and return to the pot.

Mashing and Mixing

  1. 5

    Add Butter and Milk

Add the unsalted butter to the hot potatoes and let it melt. Pour in the whole milk.

  2. 6

    Mash Potatoes

Using a potato masher or ricer, mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy. If you prefer a chunkier texture, mash to your desired consistency.

  3. 7

    Season

Season with salt and black pepper, mixing well to incorporate. Adjust seasoning to taste.

  4. 8

    Add Optional Ingredients

If desired, mix in cream cheese for extra creaminess and chopped chives for flavor.

Serving

  1. 9

    Serve Warm

Transfer the whipped potatoes to a serving bowl and top with additional butter or chives if desired. Serve immediately.
