Method
Prepare the Flatbread
- 1
Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
Mix Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil.
- 3
Knead the Dough
Mix until a dough forms. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 4
Let Dough Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Assemble and Bake
- 5
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C).
- 6
Shape Flatbread
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into your desired flatbread shape (rectangle or circle).
- 7
Add Sauce and Toppings
Transfer the rolled-out flatbread to a baking sheet. Spread classic red sauce evenly on top, leaving a small border around the edges. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese, followed by sliced elk sausage and pepperoni. Add Italian seasoning and red pepper flakes to taste.
- 8
Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling.
- 9
Garnish and Serve
Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, and garnish with fresh basil leaves before slicing and serving.
