Method

Cake Directions

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, beat the eggs, then add the milk, oil, and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Slowly stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth.

  5. 5

    Bake the Cake

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  6. 6

    Cool the Cakes

Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Frosting Directions

  1. 7

    Prepare the Frosting

In a medium bowl, cream the unsalted butter until smooth. Gradually add cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with the milk, beating until fluffy. Stir in vanilla extract.

  2. 8

    Frost the Cake

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.

Serving Directions

  1. 9

    Serve with Ice Cream

Slice the chocolate layer cake and serve each slice with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side.
