Method
Cooking Pasta
- 1
Boil Water
In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil. Add 1 tsp of salt.
- 2
Cook Cavatappi
Add 2 cups of cavatappi pasta to the boiling water. Stir occasionally and cook according to package instructions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes.
- 3
Drain Pasta
Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside.
Making Cheese Sauce
- 4
Melt Butter
In the same pot, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat.
- 5
Create Roux
Add 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour to the melted butter and whisk continuously for about 1 minute until it forms a paste.
- 6
Add Milk
Gradually add 2 cups of milk to the roux, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
- 7
Add Cheese and Spices
Stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, 1 tsp of garlic powder, 1 tsp of onion powder, 0.5 tsp of ground black pepper, and 0.5 tsp of paprika. Mix until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.
Combining and Baking
- 8
Combine Pasta and Sauce
Add the drained cavatappi pasta to the cheese sauce. Stir until the pasta is evenly coated.
- 9
Prepare Topping
In a small bowl, mix 0.5 cups of breadcrumbs, 0.5 cups of grated parmesan cheese, and 1 tablespoon of olive oil until combined.
- 10
Transfer to Baking Dish
Pour the mac and cheese mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Evenly distribute the breadcrumb topping over the top.
- 11
Bake
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
