Method

Fries

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Wash and peel the russet potatoes. Cut them into thin strips to make fries.

  2. 2

    Fry the Potatoes

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the potato strips in batches until golden brown, about 3-5 minutes per batch.

  3. 3

    Season

Remove the fries from the oil and drain on paper towels. Season with salt while still hot.

Michigan Meat Sauce

  1. 4

    Cook the Beef

In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Drain excess fat.

  2. 5

    Add Vegetables

Add diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet, cooking until the onion is translucent.

  3. 6

    Combine Ingredients

Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, beef broth, chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 15-20 minutes.

Caramelized Onions

  1. 7

    Cook Onions

In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they start to soften.

  2. 8

    Add Sugar

Sprinkle sugar over the onions and continue to cook until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.

Housemade Cheese Whiz

  1. 9

    Melt Cheese

In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in cornstarch until smooth.

  2. 10

    Add Milk and Cheese

Slowly add milk while whisking. Once combined, add shredded cheddar cheese and stir until melted and smooth. Season with salt.

Assembly

  1. 11

    Assemble the Dish

On a plate, layer the fries, top with Michigan meat sauce, caramelized onions, and drizzle with housemade cheese whiz.
