Prep Fruits & Syrup

1

Slice fruits

Thinly slice the orange, lemon, lime, and apple. Reserve one nice orange slice for the glass garnish. Place remaining slices in a medium bowl or pitcher.

2

Prepare simple syrup (if not ready)

If you don't have prepared simple syrup, combine equal parts granulated sugar and water in a small saucepan (e.g., 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water). Heat gently until sugar dissolves, then cool to room temperature before using. Measure out 3 tablespoons for the recipe.

Build Sansgria

3

In a large pitcher, add the sliced fruits and gently muddle them 4–6 times with a wooden spoon or muddler to release juices and oils. Do not pulverize—just press enough to macerate the fruit.

4

Pour in 3 cups of dry red wine over the muddled fruit.

5

Add 3 tablespoons of simple syrup and 2 tablespoons of orange liqueur (if using) to the pitcher. Stir gently to combine and dissolve the syrup.

6

Tear the mint leaves lightly to bruise them and add them to the mixture, stirring once to distribute the aroma.

7

Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably 2–4 hours, to let flavors marry. For a chilled, not overly diluted result, avoid adding ice to the pitcher during this time.

Finish & Serve

8

When ready to serve, add 1 cup chilled sparkling water to the pitcher and stir gently to combine. Taste and adjust sweetness with up to 1 additional tablespoon of simple syrup if desired.

9

Fill a large wine glass about two-thirds with large ice cubes (about 2–3 large cubes per glass).

10

Strain or spoon a generous portion of fruit and wine into the glass, leaving some fruit in the pitcher for subsequent pours. Ensure each glass receives a mix of wine and fruit pieces.

11

Garnish the rim with the reserved orange slice and add a mint sprig. Optionally, slide the orange slice onto the rim or float it on top.

12

Serve immediately. If making ahead for a party, keep the sparkling water separate and add it just before serving to preserve fizz.
