Blackberry Syrup
Cocktail
Method
Blackberry Syrup
Cook fruit
Combine blackberries, granulated sugar, and water in a small saucepan over medium heat.
Bring mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally. Cook 6–8 minutes, pressing berries with the back of a spoon to release juices and dissolve sugar.
Remove from heat and stir in the fresh lemon juice to brighten flavor.
Strain the berry mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl, pressing solids to extract as much syrup as possible. Discard solids or reserve for another use.
Let the syrup cool to room temperature. Transfer to a sealed container and refrigerate until ready to use. Makes roughly 5–6 tablespoons; yield will cover the recipe.
Cocktail
If using chilled glassware, prepare now. Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice.
Add 2 tablespoons blackberry syrup, bourbon, fresh lime juice, orange liqueur, and Angostura bitters to the shaker.
Shake vigorously 12–15 seconds until well chilled (shaker feels cold and slightly frosty).
Strain the cocktail into a rocks glass over fresh ice. If you prefer a lighter, spritz-style drink, top with 2 ounces club soda and gently stir once to combine.
Garnish with 2–3 fresh blackberries skewered (or floating), a lime wheel on the rim, and a mint sprig if desired. Serve immediately.
