Method
Preparing the Patties
- 1
Mix the Sausage
In a mixing bowl, combine the ground Italian sausage with garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and Italian seasoning. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
- 2
Form the Patties
Divide the sausage mixture into two equal portions and shape each portion into a large patty, approximately 5 inches in diameter.
Cooking the Patties
- 3
Cook the Patties
Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the patties to the skillet and cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side or until they are nicely browned and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 160°F/70°C).
- 4
Melt the Cheese
During the last minute of cooking, sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over each patty. Cover the skillet with a lid to help the cheese melt completely.
Assembling the Giant Hot Dago
- 5
Prepare the Rolls
While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the submarine or hoagie rolls in a toaster or on a grill until golden brown.
- 6
Add the Sauce
Once the patties are cooked and the cheese is melted, remove them from the skillet and place each patty inside a toasted roll. Pour the original red sauce generously over the patties.
- 7
Garnish and Serve
If desired, add fresh basil leaves on top of the sauce for added flavor. Serve immediately and enjoy your Giant Hot Dago!
