Coffee

Method

Coffee

  1. 1

    Measure beans

Measure 10 g (about 0.0625 cups) of fresh whole coffee beans for one 8 fl oz (1 cup) brewed coffee. This yields a standard strength near a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio (10 g coffee : 160 g water). Adjust proportionally for more servings.

  2. 2

    Heat water

Heat filtered water to 195–205°F (90–96°C). For an electric kettle without variable temperature, bring to a boil and let sit 30–45 seconds before pouring.

  3. 3

    Grind beans

Grind the measured beans to a grind size appropriate for your brew method: medium-coarse for French press, medium for drip/pour-over, or fine for espresso. For pour-over/drip, aim for texture like granulated sugar; for French press, aim for coarse, like sea salt.

  4. 4

    Prepare equipment

If using pour-over or drip: place a paper filter in the dripper and rinse it with hot water to remove paper taste and preheat the dripper and server. Discard rinse water. If using French press: add ground coffee to the carafe. If using an automatic drip machine, add grounds to the basket and ensure the water reservoir is filled.

  5. 5

    Bloom (pour-over/French press step)

For pour-over or French press: start by pouring just enough hot water (about 2× the weight of the coffee, ~20 g water) evenly over the grounds to saturate them, and let sit for 30–45 seconds. This 'bloom' releases CO2 and improves extraction.

  6. 6

    Brew

Continue pouring or allow extraction according to method: - Pour-over: slowly pour the remaining hot water in a steady spiral, targeting a total brewed water weight of ~160 g (1 cup); finish pour in 2–3 minutes total brew time. - French press: add remaining hot water to total ~160 g, stir gently, cover, and let steep 4 minutes, then press. - Drip machine: start machine; extraction typically completes in 3–5 minutes.

  7. 7

    Serve

Immediately transfer brewed coffee to a cup to avoid over-extraction from sitting on grounds (especially with pour-over or French press).

  8. 8

    Customize

Add optional milk/creamer and sweetener to taste if desired. Stir and taste; adjust for next brew by changing coffee dose or grind size to reach preferred strength and flavor.

  9. 9

    Cleanup

Discard used grounds and filter (compost if possible). Rinse brewer, server, and grinder. Store leftover beans in an airtight container away from heat, light and moisture.
