1

Brew coffee

Brew 1 cup (8 fl oz) of drip coffee using your usual method. Aim for a standard-strength brew (about 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio). Keep it hot.

2

Prepare espresso

Pull 1 hot shot of espresso (about 1 oz). If you don’t have an espresso machine, brew 1 oz of very strong coffee (use a concentrated pour-over, AeroPress inverted method, or Moka pot) and keep it hot.

3

Assemble the Red Eye

Pour the hot drip coffee into a heatproof mug. Immediately add the hot espresso shot on top of the drip coffee. Stir gently to combine.

4

Adjust strength and flavor

Taste the drink. If it’s too intense, add up to 2 fl oz (about 2 tbsp) hot water and stir. Stir in 1 tsp granulated sugar if you prefer sweetness. Add 2 tbsp milk or cream for a creamier texture, or leave black if preferred.

5

Serve

Serve immediately while hot. Offer additional sugar, milk, or cream on the side.
