Cocktail
1. Chill glass
Place a rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and water to chill while you prepare the drink.
2. Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass filled about two-thirds with ice, add 2 oz Maker's Mark 101, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes aromatic bitters, and 1 dash orange bitters.
3. Stir to chill and dilute
Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture briskly for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full turns) until the mixing glass is well chilled and the dilution feels right. If you prefer slightly more open flavor or need a touch more dilution with high-proof 101, add ~0.25 oz chilled water and stir another 5–10 seconds.
4. Prepare glass
Discard ice/water from the chilled rocks glass and add one large clear ice cube or several large ice spheres to the glass.
5. Strain
Double-strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube, using a Hawthorne or julep strainer (fine mesh optional) to keep any small shards out.
Garnish & Serve
6. Express orange oils
Take the orange peel, hold it skin-side down over the glass and give it a firm twist to express the oils onto the surface of the drink. Optionally rub the peel along the rim of the glass to transfer more aroma.
7. Garnish
Drop the expressed orange peel into the drink or rest it on the rim. Serve immediately.
8. Tasting notes
Sip slowly to appreciate the bold caramel and vanilla of Maker's Mark 101 balanced by the herbal-sweet vermouth and warming bitters. Adjust future pours or water dilution to taste.
