Method
Preparing the Marinara Sauce
- 1
- 2
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- 3
Simmer Sauce
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the chopped basil just before serving.
Preparing the Calamari
- 4
Prepare the Breading Station
In a shallow dish, combine the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. In another dish, place the beaten eggs. In a third dish, add the breadcrumbs.
- 5
Dredge the Calamari
Dip each calamari ring first into the flour mixture, then into the beaten eggs, and finally coat it with breadcrumbs. Ensure each piece is well-coated.
- 6
- 7
Fry the Calamari
Carefully place the breaded calamari rings into the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
- 8
Drain and Serve
Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried calamari from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot with the marinara sauce.
