Main Ingredient

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Gather and prep

Bring your egg to room temperature for 5–10 minutes if time allows (this helps even cooking). Lay out butter/oil, salt, pepper and any optional garnishes. Have a small nonstick skillet and a spatula ready.

Cooking

  1. 2

    Heat the pan

Place a 6–8 inch nonstick skillet over medium-low heat. Add 1 tsp butter or oil and let it melt/spread to coat the pan. Heat until the fat shimmers (but does not brown) — about 30–45 seconds on medium-low.

  2. 3

    Crack the egg

Crack the large egg into a small bowl or ramekin to check for shells and make it easier to slide into the pan. Then gently pour the egg into the center of the skillet.

  3. 4

Cook to desired doneness — sunny-side up

Cook undisturbed on medium-low heat for 2½–3½ minutes, until whites are set but yolk still jiggles. If you prefer the whites fully set at the top without flipping, cover the skillet with a lid for the last 30–60 seconds to steam the surface.

  4. 5

Cook to desired doneness — over-easy/medium/hard

For over-easy: when whites are set (about 2–3 minutes), carefully slide a spatula under the egg, flip gently, and cook 10–20 seconds for a runny yolk. For over-medium: flip and cook 30–45 seconds for a slightly set yolk. For over-hard: flip and cook 1–2 minutes until yolk is fully set.

  5. 6

    Season

Immediately after cooking, season with a pinch of kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

Finishing & serving

  1. 7

Slide the egg gently onto a plate. If using optional garnish, sprinkle chopped herbs and/or a small amount of grated cheese on top while the egg is hot so cheese melts slightly. Serve immediately.
