Method
Sandwich
- 1
Prep lettuce
Place shredded lettuce in a small bowl. Sprinkle with 1/8 tsp black pepper and 1/4 tsp salt. Toss gently to combine so the lettuce is lightly seasoned and set aside.
- 2
Prepare bread
If you prefer toasted bread, heat a skillet over medium. Lightly butter one side of each bread slice with the butter. Place buttered-side down in the skillet and toast 1–2 minutes until golden and crisp. Alternatively, toast under a broiler for 1–2 minutes, watching closely. Remove and keep warm.
- 3
Assemble condiments
On the bottom slice of bread, spread 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise in an even layer. On the top slice of bread, spread 2 tablespoons of pepper relish (adjust to taste).
- 4
Layer sandwich
Pile the 6 oz sliced turkey evenly over the mayo-coated bread. Arrange the 2 slices of fontina cheese on top of the turkey so they cover most of the meat. Top the cheese with the seasoned shredded lettuce, pressing gently to compact the layers slightly.
- 5
Finish and serve
Place the relish-spread bread slice on top, press lightly, and cut the sandwich in half if desired. Serve immediately. If you want the cheese warmed/melted, place the assembled sandwich on a heated skillet for 30–60 seconds per side with a lid to encourage melting before cutting.
