Method

Cocktail Preparation

  1. 1

    Measure and pour

Chill an old-fashioned (rocks) glass by filling with ice and setting aside, or place it in the freezer for a few minutes. In a mixing glass, add 2 oz Montenegro amaro (or a similar amaro if unavailable), 1 oz blended rye or Bourbon, 0.5 oz sweet vermouth, and 0.25 oz orange curaçao.

  2. 2

    Add bitters

Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters to the mixing glass.

  3. 3

    Stir with ice

Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir gently with a bar spoon for 30–45 seconds (about 20–30 full turns) until the mixture is well-chilled and properly diluted (glass becomes cold and slightly frosted).

  4. 4

    Prepare serving glass

Discard the ice from the chilled rocks glass and drop in a single large ice cube (or two regular ice cubes).

  5. 5

    Strain

Double-strain or fine-strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube.

  6. 6

    Garnish and finish

Express the oils of an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the glass and giving it a good squeeze so the oils spray onto the surface. Run the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink as garnish.
