Method

Preparation of Base Infusion

  1. 1

    Create the Herbal Infusion

In a large pot, combine the gentian root, dried orange peel, cinnamon stick, cloves, star anise, juniper berries, and 500 ml of water. Bring to a boil over medium heat.

  2. 2

    Simmer the Infusion

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 30 minutes. Stir occasionally to ensure even extraction of flavors.

  3. 3

    Strain the Infusion

After 30 minutes, remove the pot from heat and strain the mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth into a clean container, discarding the solids.

Sweetening the Infusion

  1. 4

    Prepare the Simple Syrup

In a small saucepan, combine 100 ml of water and 200 g of sugar. Heat over low heat, stirring until the sugar completely dissolves to create a simple syrup.

  2. 5

    Combine Syrup with Infusion

Mix the prepared simple syrup with the strained herbal infusion in the container. Stir well to combine.

Finalizing the Amaro

  1. 6

    Add Final Flavorings

Add 1 tsp of vanilla extract and 500 ml of high-proof vodka (or neutral spirit) to the mixture. Stir thoroughly to incorporate all flavors.

  2. 7

    Bottle and Age

Transfer the mixture into clean glass bottles, seal tightly, and allow to age for at least 2 weeks in a cool, dark place. Shake the bottles gently every few days.

  3. 8

    Serve

After 2 weeks, your Lo-Fi Gentian Amaro is ready to be enjoyed. Serve it chilled or over ice as a digestif.
