Preparation

Optional: rim (smokier accent)
If using smoked salt or dried oregano for a subtle savory rim, spread a pinch on a small plate. Run the orange twist zest lightly around the glass lip to moisten, then dip the rim into the smoked salt/oregano so a thin ring adheres. Return glass to freezer or set aside.
Mixing
- 3
Add the mezcal (2 oz), Italicus (0.75 oz), blanc vermouth (0.75 oz), and orange bitters (3 dashes) into a mixing glass or cocktail shaker.
- 4
Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice (approximately 1 cup) and stir with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted (internal temperature around 2–4°C / 35–40°F). If using a shaker, shake briefly for about 8–10 seconds and then strain into the chilled glass—stirring is preferred to preserve clarity and silky texture.

Express the oils from the orange twist over the surface of the cocktail by holding the twist with the outside of the peel facing down and giving it a firm squeeze. Run the twist around the rim (if not rimmed earlier) and drop it into the drink for aroma.

Serve immediately.
