Custard

Caramel

Method

Caramel Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Caramel

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of sugar and 1 tablespoon of water. Stir gently until the sugar begins to dissolve.

  2. 2

    Cook Until Golden

Continue to cook without stirring until the sugar turns a golden amber color. This should take about 5-7 minutes. Be careful not to burn it.

  3. 3

    Pour into Flan Mold

Quickly pour the caramel into the bottom of a round flan mold or oven-safe dish, tilting the dish to evenly coat the bottom. Set aside to cool and harden.

Custard Preparation

  1. 4

    Blend the Custard Ingredients

In a blender, combine 4 eggs, 1 can of sweetened condensed milk, 1 can of evaporated milk, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Blend until smooth and well combined.

  2. 5

    Pour Custard into Mold

Pour the custard mixture carefully over the hardened caramel in the flan mold.

  3. 6

    Prepare for Baking

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the flan mold inside a larger baking dish and fill the outer dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold.

  4. 7

    Bake the Flan

Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until the center is set and a knife inserted comes out clean.

  5. 8

    Cool and Refrigerate

Remove the flan from the oven and let it cool at room temperature. Once cooled, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

  6. 9

    Serve

To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan and invert it onto a serving platter. Enjoy your traditional Mexican flan!
