Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Pickles

Open the jar of dill pickles and drain the liquid. Pat the pickles dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

Batter Preparation

  1. 2

    Make the Batter

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until fully combined. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined; do not overmix.

Frying

  1. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 4

    Fry the Pickles

Dunk each pickle slice into the batter, allowing excess batter to drip off. Carefully place the battered pickles into the hot oil, a few at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried pickles and drain them on paper towels.

Serving

  1. 5

    Serve

Arrange the fried pickles on a platter and serve hot with ranch dressing on the side for dipping.
