Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Mix well.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together warm milk, melted butter, and the activated yeast mixture. Add the egg and mix until well combined.

  4. 4

    Form Dough

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.

  5. 5

    Let Dough Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Cinnamon Sugar Preparation

  1. 6

    Combine Cinnamon Sugar

In a bowl, mix together granulated sugar and ground cinnamon until well combined. Set aside.

Pale Ale Glaze Preparation

  1. 7

    Make Glaze

In a saucepan, combine pale ale and powdered sugar over medium heat. Whisk together until smooth and slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

Frying

  1. 8

    Heat Oil

In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 9

    Roll Out Dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.

  3. 10

    Cut Dough

Using a pizza cutter or knife, cut the dough into large oval shapes, about 6-8 inches long.

  4. 11

    Fry Elephant Ears

Carefully place the cut dough into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove and drain on paper towels.

  5. 12

    Coat with Cinnamon Sugar

While still warm, generously coat each fried elephant ear with the cinnamon sugar mixture.

  6. 13

    Drizzle with Glaze

Finally, drizzle the pale ale glaze over the cinnamon-sugar-coated elephant ears before serving.
