Main

Method

Prepare and Cook

  1. 1

    Bring water to a boil

Place 4 cups water in a medium saucepan and bring to a rolling boil over high heat.

  2. 2

    Add edamame

Add 1 cup frozen edamame in pods to the boiling water. Stir once to separate any clumps and return to a boil.

  3. 3

    Cook until tender

Boil the edamame for 3 to 5 minutes until the pods are bright green and the beans inside are tender when tested. For firmer beans, cook 3 minutes; for softer, up to 5 minutes.

  4. 4

    Drain and shock

Immediately drain the edamame in a colander. (Optional) Rinse quickly under cold running water or transfer to an ice bath to stop cooking if you prefer a firmer bite and brighter color; otherwise, let drain briefly to remove excess water.

Season and Serve

  1. 5

    Season

Return the drained edamame to the saucepan or a mixing bowl. Sprinkle with 1 tsp coarse kosher salt (adjust to taste), 1 tsp toasted sesame oil, 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper, and 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes if using. Toss or shake gently to distribute the seasoning so it clings to the pods.

  2. 6

    Plate and finish

Transfer seasoned edamame to a serving bowl or plate. Serve hot or warm with lemon wedges passed on the side for squeezing over the pods if desired. To eat, pop the beans from the pod into your mouth and discard the shells.
