Method
Prep
- 1
Remove the vanilla ice cream from the freezer and let sit at room temperature for 1–2 minutes so it’s slightly scoopable but still firm.
- 2
Warm the hot fudge: place measured hot fudge sauce in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in 10–15 second bursts, stirring between, until pourable but not hot (about 20–30 seconds total depending on microwave). Alternatively, warm in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring, until just pourable.
- 3
If whole cookies were used, crush them into coarse crumbs by placing in a zip-top bag and pounding with a rolling pin or pulse a few times in a food processor.
Assembly
- 4
Scoop ice cream
Place a sundae dish or bowl on a flat surface. Using an ice cream scoop, place 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream into the dish, stacking slightly if desired.
- 5
Add hot fudge
Drizzle 3 tablespoons of the warmed hot fudge over the two scoops, distributing so both scoops get sauce. Reserve a little sauce if you want extra for presentation.
- 6
Add cookie crumbs
Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of chocolate cookie crumbs evenly over the sauced ice cream to create the 'dirt' texture. Gently press a few crumbs into the sauce so they adhere.
- 7
Place gummy worms
Arrange 6 gummy worms on and around the scoops so some appear to be 'burrowing' into the cookie crumb layer. Tuck a few worms partially under crumbs for a playful look.
- 8
Optional garnish
Top the sundae with about 2 tablespoons of whipped cream and finish with 1 maraschino cherry on top, if using.
- 9
Serve immediately with a small spoon so the sundae is enjoyed before the ice cream melts.
