Base & Scoops

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a tall sundae glass or bowl in the freezer for 10 minutes while you prepare toppings. Cold glass helps keep scoops from melting quickly.

  2. 2

    Warm sauces

Gently warm the hot fudge and caramel sauces in a small microwave-safe bowl for 10–15 seconds or until pourable but not hot. Stir to remove hot spots. Keep strawberry compote at room temperature or lightly warmed (5–10 seconds) if thick.

Assembling the Specialty Sundae

  1. 3

    Base layer

Remove chilled glass. Spoon 1 tablespoon of hot fudge into the bottom of the glass and spread slightly to create a flavored base.

  2. 4

    First scoops

Place three scoops of ice cream into the glass: start with two scoops of vanilla side-by-side, then a third scoop of vanilla on top (forming a small pyramid). Gently press to nestle them but avoid melting.

  3. 5

    Add chocolate & strawberry

Nestle one scoop of chocolate ice cream on one side of the vanilla pyramid and one scoop of strawberry on the opposite side so all flavors are visible. If using fewer scoops, substitute as desired but keep proportions similar.

  4. 6

    Layer sauces and mix-ins

Drizzle 1 tablespoon hot fudge over the chocolate scoop, 1 tablespoon strawberry compote over the strawberry scoop, and 1 tablespoon caramel over the center vanilla scoop. Sprinkle crushed toasted pecans evenly across the top, followed by mini chocolate chips.

  5. 7

    Whipped cream & garnishes

Pipe or spoon about 4 tablespoons of fresh whipped cream across the top, creating two or three dollops. Place maraschino cherries on top of the whipped cream (one cherry per dollop, reserve one to display on the rim). Scatter toasted coconut flakes and chocolate shavings over the whipped cream. Insert a wafer cookie at a slight angle into the side for height.

  6. 8

    Finishing touches (optional)

For an affogato-style twist, pour one espresso shot over the sundae immediately before serving. Alternatively, add a pinch of sprinkles for extra color. Serve immediately with a long spoon.

Serving & Storage

  1. 9

Serve the sundae immediately after assembling to maintain texture contrasts. If you must prepare a short time ahead (3–5 minutes), keep in a chilled location. Leftover components (sauces, compote, nuts) can be stored in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 7 days; do not store an assembled sundae.
