Cocktail

Optional (for rinsing or adjusting)

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or chilled martini glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink to ensure the cocktail stays very cold.

  2. 2

    Prepare garnish

Skewer 1 cocktail onion on a small cocktail pick. If using jarred onions, rinse briefly if overly briny; for a more aromatic garnish, leave as-is.

Mixing

  1. 3

Fill a mixing glass three-quarters full with fresh ice (about 1 cup).

  2. 4

Add 2.5 oz gin and 0.5 oz dry vermouth to the mixing glass. If you prefer a drier Gibson, reduce the vermouth to 0.25 oz or rinse the chilled glass with vermouth instead (pour 0.25 oz into the glass, swirl to coat, then discard excess).

  3. 5

Stir the mixture gently with a bar spoon for 30–45 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (stir until the mixing glass feels very cold). Avoid shaking to keep the drink clear and silky.

  4. 6

Discard the ice or water from the chilled serving glass if you used ice water. Strain the stirred cocktail through a fine strainer or julep strainer into the chilled coupe or martini glass.

  5. 7

Garnish with the skewered cocktail onion placed in the center of the glass. Optionally express a twist of orange peel over the surface and discard or rub the rim lightly if you used the peel.
