Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture along with vegetable oil. Stir until a dough begins to form.

  3. 3

    Knead Dough

Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and allow it to rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Filling Preparation

  1. 4

    Mix Filling Ingredients

In a medium bowl, combine the ground pork, shredded cabbage, chopped green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, minced ginger, and minced garlic. Mix well until everything is evenly incorporated.

Assembly and Cooking

  1. 5

    Shape Bao

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into equal portions (about 8 balls). Roll each ball into a flat circle, about 4-5 inches in diameter. Place a tablespoon of filling in the center of each circle.

  2. 6

    Seal Bao

Fold the edges of the dough over the filling, pinching to seal tightly. Ensure there are no gaps to prevent the filling from leaking out during steaming.

  3. 7

    Prepare Steamer

Line a bamboo steamer or a heatproof plate with parchment paper. Place the bao in the steamer, leaving enough space for them to expand.

  4. 8

    Steam Bao

Bring water to a boil in a large pot or wok. Place the steamer over the boiling water and cover. Steam the bao for about 15-20 minutes until they are fluffy and cooked through.
