Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

    Rinse and Soak Rice

Begin by rinsing the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky. Soak the rinsed rice in water for 30 minutes, then drain.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Vegetables

While the rice is soaking, chop the onion and prepare the mixed vegetables. You can use frozen mixed vegetables for convenience or chop fresh ones.

  3. 3

    Sauté Aromatics

In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds. Then add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.

  4. 4

    Add Garlic and Ginger

Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the pot and sauté for another 2 minutes until fragrant.

  5. 5

    Cook Vegetables

Stir in the mixed vegetables and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to soften.

  6. 6

    Season the Mixture

Add the turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt to the pot. Mix everything well to coat the vegetables with the spices.

  7. 7

    Cook the Rice

Add the soaked and drained rice to the pot, stirring gently to combine. Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil.

  8. 8

    Simmer

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.

  9. 9

    Fluff and Serve

Remove the pot from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with chopped cilantro before serving.
