Cocktail Base

Ice & Tools

Method

Cocktail Base

  1. 1

    Measure and combine

Add 2 oz dry gin, 0.5 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz ginger liqueur (or 0.5 oz ginger syrup + 0.25 oz orange liqueur) and 0.25 oz simple syrup to a cocktail shaker.

  2. 2

    Add ice and shake

Fill the shaker with the specified amount of shaker ice (about 1 cup). Shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until the outside of the shaker is cold and well chilled.

Carbonation & Finish

  1. 3

    Strain into glass

Fill a highball or Collins glass with serving ice (about 1 cup). Double-strain the shaken mixture into the prepared glass to remove small ice shards and bits of pulp.

  2. 4

    Top with lager

Gently top the cocktail with 3 oz cold Japanese lager (Sapporo is traditional) to preserve carbonation. Pour slowly over the back of a spoon or down the side of the glass if you want a gentler mix.

  3. 5

    Bitters and garnish

Add 1 dash of Angostura bitters on top; it will float briefly and add aromatic complexity. Garnish with a lime wheel or twist on the rim. Serve immediately.

Ice & Tools

  1. 6

Ensure you used fresh, cold ice for both shaking and serving to keep the cocktail properly chilled and to maintain the beer's carbonation when combined.
