Cocktail
Optional rinse/variation
Method
Prepare and chill
- 1
Chill glass
Place a coupe glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure the drink is served very cold.
Mixing the cocktail
- 2
Add the gin (2 oz), maraschino liqueur (0.5 oz), fresh lemon juice (0.75 oz), and Crème de Violette (1 tsp) into a cocktail shaker.
- 3
If you prefer the Aviation slightly sweeter, add 0.25 oz demerara or simple syrup (optional).
- 4
Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup) and secure the lid.
- 5
Shake vigorously for 12–18 seconds, until the shaker is very cold and well diluted (this chills and slightly dilutes the spirit and citrus).
Strain and garnish
- 6
Discard the ice or water from the coupe if you were chilling it, and double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer (this removes small ice shards and citrus pulp).
- 7
Garnish with a single Luxardo maraschino cherry placed in the bottom of the glass or on a cocktail pick.
- 8
Serve immediately. Enjoy.
