Prepare the Glass
Start by selecting an old fashioned glass (also known as a rocks glass) and place it on a stable surface.

Muddle the Sugar
Place the sugar cube in the glass and add the Angostura bitters and water. Using a muddler or the back of a spoon, muddle these ingredients together until the sugar is dissolved.

Add Bourbon
Pour the bourbon over the muddled sugar mixture in the glass.

Add Ice
Fill the glass with ice cubes, preferably one large cube or sphere to minimize dilution.

Garnish
Express the oils from the orange peel over the drink by holding it over the glass and giving it a gentle twist, then drop it into the drink. Add the maraschino cherry as a garnish.

Stir and Serve
Using a bar spoon, gently stir the drink to combine the ingredients. Serve immediately.
