Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Mixtures

Make a well in the center of the flour mixture, add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.

  4. 4

    Knead Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    Let Dough Rise

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Pizza Assembly

  1. 6

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat.

  2. 7

    Shape Dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a floured surface. Roll or stretch it into a 12-inch circle.

  3. 8

    Add Sauce

If desired, spread a thin layer of tomato sauce over the dough. (Optional, as traditional Margherita pizza is often made without sauce.)

  4. 9

    Add Toppings

Slice the fresh mozzarella and tomatoes. Arrange the mozzarella slices evenly over the dough, followed by the tomato slices.

  5. 10

    Season

Drizzle olive oil over the top, and season with salt and black pepper to taste.

  6. 11

    Bake Pizza

Transfer the pizza to the oven (or pizza stone) and bake for about 12-15 minutes or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.

  7. 12

    Garnish

Remove the pizza from the oven and immediately top with fresh basil leaves.

  8. 13

    Slice and Serve

Let the pizza cool for a few minutes, then slice and serve hot.
