Calamari

Spicy Marinara Sauce

Method

Calamari Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Calamari

Clean the calamari by removing the head, tentacles, and innards. Rinse under cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Cut the bodies into rings.

  2. 2

    Set Up Breading Station

In a shallow bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until well combined.

  3. 3

    Breading the Calamari

Dip each calamari ring first into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then coat thoroughly in the flour mixture.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Fry the Calamari

Fry the calamari rings in batches for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Spicy Marinara Sauce Preparation

  1. 6

    Sauté the Garlic

In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.

  2. 7

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Add crushed tomatoes, red pepper flakes, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.

  3. 8

    Simmer the Sauce

Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

  4. 9

    Finish with Fresh Basil

Stir in fresh basil just before serving. Adjust seasoning if needed.
